New Design for Old Buildings: smaller projects - domestic and commercial

29 October 2019, 13:30 - 17:00

This NEW afternoon seminar will provide an introduction to / understanding of the principles of designing new work for old buildings and to integrating alterations / additions sensitively and sustainably, whilst protecting historic character and fabric. The seminar will also explore the 'whole building' approach to intervention and refurbishment, with reference to the SPAB Approach and case studies of smaller scale domestic and commercial projects.

The seminar will be led by architectural writer Roger Hunt, co-author of the Old House Handbook, the Old House Eco Handbook and the bestselling SPAB / RIBA book New Design for Old Buildings (2018).

Guest speakers will be architect and retrofit expert Harry Paticas (Arboreal); architect Charles Thomson (Studio 54) and conservation builder William Fuller (Fullers Builders), who will describe their approaches to new work in historic contexts through reference to recent projects.
