Friday 17th, Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th August at the Falkland Estate, Falkland, Fife Attention is drawn to the three-day symposium with which several members of the SPAB Scotland Committee are closely involved. 17th August - A programme of stimulating lectures by leading authorities in their fields and which are addressed to fellow professionals and to all who are interested in traditional building materials and skills. There will also be a late-afternoon of the House of Falkland, a major country house by William Burn (1839-44) with 1890s additions to the interiors by Robert Weir Schultz, one of the leading Scottish architects of the Arts & Crafts period who was part of the first generation of SPAB and Arts Workers' Guild circles working in London as well as is Scotland. 18th August - The emphasis will be on craftspeople 'speaking for themselves'. 19th August - A family-orientated day for which no charge is being made and when there will be even more craft-related activities and a privileged (in the sense of 'after hours' with expert guides) visit round Falkland Palace. All the activities are based around the early 19thC Stables courtyard which is the home of the Falkland Centre for Stewardship. Throughout the three days there will be many practical activities in progress including working with wood and stone, firing up a lime-kiln, pointing with earth and lime mortars, repairing two magnificent estate walls, and so on.
