SPAB co-founder Phillip Webb was born on 12 January 1831. An architect, designer and conservationist, his philosophy of sympathetic repair in place of clumsy restoration or demolition led the way for modern building conservationists. 

To mark Heritage Treasures Day Tuesday 14 January, our Training Officer Catherine shared a favourite heritage space she visited in 2024: "Of the many extraordinary places I visited, Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens was a highlight. This hidden gem is a rare example of an early 18th-century walled garden, just a bus ride from Birmingham city centre. We held a two-day working party here during a glorious weekend in June. Our participants learned about brickwork maintenance and repair while helping the charitable trust keep the garden open and accessible to the public.”
