The heritage-rich historic cities of Europe are home to iconic historic buildings recognised the world over and a magnet for visitors. But they often experience considerable pressure as a consequence of their enduring popularity, affecting local communities, infrastructure and the buildings themselves.

Architect John Sell, Executive Vice-President of the Europe-wide heritage network Europa Nostra, discusses how these issues affect two World Heritage cities.
