The SPAB have once again teamed up with Historic Royal Palaces to offer a programme of one-day masterclasses specialising in building conservation and repair. Combining lectures, practical demonstrations and hands-on workshops, these masterclasses are designed for those who are professionally involved with buildings (e.g. architects, surveyors, engineers, planners, builders, contractors, craftsmen and women). The masterclasses are recognised for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC). Certificates of attendance are available for delegates.

The aim of this masterclass is to look at issues of repair and conservation of free-standing walls, using the garden walls at Hampton Court Palace as a case study. Delegates will also gain experience of practical techniques by direct hands-on work on the walls themselves.

Topics covered

Theory (using case studies)
Characteristics, function and location of freestanding walls
Good design principles
Common defects
Carrying out surveys
Planning repair works
Specific repair techniques

Carrying out a condition survey
Drafting a repair schedule
Selecting materials
Re-pointing – removal, application and aftercare
Brick replacement – removal, materials, bedding and aftercare

Course leader

Emma Simpson - a brickwork conservation specialist with over 20 years of knowledge and expertise in this field.

Please note: delegates will need to be prepared with steel toe-capped footwear and suitable clothing; all other PPE will be provided on the day.
