Historic Bar Tour - The Grill, Aberdeen

SPAB Scotland are coming to you!  We will be choosing a historic drinking establishments across the country for an informal meet up of SPAB members and associated friends. The aim of the event is to bring together SPAB Scotland members and non-members to discuss all things conservation over a pint, with the historic settings also sparking some discussion.  

On Thursday 20th September we will be meeting at The Grill, 213 Union Street, Aberdeen AB11 6BA from 6pm onwards.

We won't be reserving an area but will hopefully be able to commandeer an area, and look out for a SPAB membership leaflet on the table if you aren't familiar with any other SPAB members.  The event will be hosted by Jamie McNamara, memeber of the SPAB Scotland Committee, and Project Officer for the Union Street Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS). He will be on hand to ask about proposals for the area, so it will be a most interesting evening. 

Category B listed, The Grill is notable for the fine plasterwork interior, and a splendid mahogany veneer gantry behind the bar which we hope to admire.  The bar occupies the ground floor of a typical granite 1830s building, and started out as a restaurant of the same name in 1870.  The present bar was refurbished in 1925, and includes the unusual oxided-bronze fascia panels which are so distinctive externally.

Members of the SPAB living and working in Scotland decided to form their own semi-autonomous group in 1995. Scotland has its own building traditions, architectural language and property laws, all of which are best dealt with locally. All members of the SPAB residing in Scotland are automatically members of SPAB Scotland.
