Milling Matters - Life Cycles of Textile Mills

Registration is closed for this event
Adapt, Re-use and Recycle is central to our outlook regarding existing buildings, and forms a key part of Historic Environment Scotland's approach. Hear from Mark Watson about his views on how these magnificent buildings can be adapted for new uses. Presented by SPAB Scotland

The best use for a building might be its next use, and not the one for which it was built. Textile mills that survive today are almost all in their second or third use, something unimaginable to their builders. They present an opportunity for creative design interventions that will use again and again the embodied carbon that went into their initial construction. Not restoration, not minimal intervention, but rehabilitation, refurbishment and revalidation of mills. Does SPAB approve?

Mark Watson of Historic Environment Scotland's Conservation Team will present some of his wide ranging research into the life cycle of a textile mill, from orginal construction through use, managed decline, evenutal adaptation and re-use.  Mark will be joined by co- presenter Iara Calton, PhD student at Glasgow University, who will describe the digital map resources she created with National Library of Scotland, mapping mill locations. This promises to be a most thought-provoking and interesting discussion, make sure you join us for the Q&A session at the end as well.
