Protecting Cultural Sites in Conflict Zones
The new 'Monuments Men' - the British Army Cultural Property Protection Unit

Presented by O/Cdt Tim Fagg (member of the CPPU)
12 March 2020, 18:15 - 20:30

Events in two world wars, the break up of the former Yugoslavia, and conflicts in Iraq and Syria have demonstrated the devastating effects of armed conflict on heritage and cultural sites. The 1954 Hague Convention, with its requirements to 'respect and protect' cultural property during war, was ratified by the UK in 2017, though there have long been measures in place to identify and safeguard buildings, monuments and cultural sites under threat in conflict zones. This lecture will explore the work of the Army's newly-established Cultural Property Protection Unit.

Venue: St Botolph's Church Hall, Bishopsgate, London, EC2M 3TL. The church hall is located behind St Botolph without Bishopsgate Church, which is less than a two minute walk away from Liverpool Street station (turn right out the Bishopsgate exit).

The lecture will be followed by an informal drinks reception.
