Repair of Flint Walls: Humble Heritage Workshop

12 September 2019, 10:00 - 17:00

Join the SPAB and flint expert John Lord at the church of St Nicholas, Feltwell, Norfolk, for this one-day practical course providing an introduction to flint working techniques and the repair of traditional flint walls.

An introductory / intermediate level course, suitable for building owners or professionals / CPD to develop practical skills; craftspeople seeking to work with flint; general interest.

Course aims:

  • Introduction to flint architecture in the area.
  • Understanding flint as a building material.
  • Exploring flint building and repair techniques, including mortar selection for flint walling.
  • Developing practical repair skills.

St Nicholas is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust and Feltwell Historical and Archaeological Society. This course is offered in partnership with Feltwell PCC as part of its project to repair and stablise the churchyard wall.

Although oddly truncated since its chancel was demolished in 1862, St Nicholas is a picturesque treasure in its village setting on the edge of the Fens. Grade I listed and built in a mixture of flint, stone, brick and regionally distinctive gingerbread-coloured Carrstone. The collapsed remnants of its massive round tower speak of its Saxon origins, and contrast with the delicacy of the flushwork panels in the nave wall and its Tudor south porch. The church sits in an elevated position, behind its equally interesting flint and brick churchyard wall, which the village community is working with the SPAB and others, including students from the College of West Anglia, to stablise and repair. Participants in this one-day workshop will be learning on site, alongside work in progress on the wall.
