The Old House Show is the SPAB's first ever exhibition and brings together a unique blend of crafts, advice, hands-on education and conservation.

Friday and Saturday, 7-8 September 2018 10am-5pm

We’re delighted to announce the launch of the first ever Old House Show, in partnership with Period Living, a free event taking place at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich over two days this September. The Old House Show takes place from Friday 7 September to Saturday 8 September 2018, and will epitomise everything the SPAB stands for. Focusing on the SPAB approach, and our unique emphasis on independent advice, crafts and education, there will be a full programme of talks, building crafts demonstrations and exhibitors with a conservation focus. Download the event programme to see what's on at the Old House Show.

Talks Programme

We have an exciting programme of expert talks planned for Old House Show. The talks will take place in the magnificent historic chapel at the Old Royal Naval College, just above the main Old House Show space. The talks are free to enter and cover a range of conservation topics. You find the full programme and speakers information here

The SPAB’s director Matthew Slocombe opens the first morning of the talks programme, setting the scene with William Morris and the SPAB Approach to Historic Buildings. Speakers will be discussing a range of themes, including World Heritage: Conservation at the Old Royal Naval College; craft skills; conservation practice; buildings archaeology; legislation and building control; New Designs for Old Buildings; and Retrofitting Old Buildings for Energy Efficiency: Key Principles; to name but a few.

Loyd Grossman, heritage champion and member of the SPAB, will deliver the keynote speech on Friday 7 September. The entrepreneur, writer and broadcaster will be discussing Why Heritage Matters. The talks programme includes contributions from the SPAB, as well as Historic England, National Trust, City & Guilds of London Art School, and a number of senior architects and consultants working in the heritage industry.

Advice Surgery

Our expert advisers at the Old House Show are on hand to help with all your old building questions. Our Advice Surgery offers impartial guidance without vested commercial interests. We have two types of advice available at the Old House Show.

Technical Advice
Our technical advisers can help with queries about repairs, defects, materials and construction techniques. They can also give you suggestions for architects, surveyors, builders, engineers and others, such as insurers, to help you with your problem or project.

Casework Advice
Our casework advisers can help you with questions about the planning and listed building consent process. They can also provide pre-application advice (on alterations and extensions) and give assistance on questions regarding local campaigning. Please note that unfortunately casework advisers cannot provide names of building professionals.
