Shahporan Mosque and Islamic Centre, Hackney Exploring a contemporary British Muslim identity A lecture presented by Shahed Saleem (Makespace)

SPAB Autumn Lecture Series 2019
The Bold and the Beautiful: exploring new design for old buildings

The SPAB believes that, alongside careful repair of historic fabric, sympathetic new interventions can help to keep old buildings in sound condition and active use.  Good new design is hard to define, but readily recognisable - respecting the old, making creative use of materials, attention to detail,  excellent craftsmanship, and establishing a dialogue between new and old. In this series of lectures we explore three projects illustrating contrasting approaches to new design for old buildings.

Shahporan Mosque and Islamic Centre: exploring a contemporary British Muslim identity
Presented by Shahed Saleem (Makespace)
14 November 2019, 18:15 - 20:30

Shahed Saleem - author of The British Mosque: an architectural and social history - describes how this project negotiated historic and contemporary architecture to extend a house-mosque in a Hackney terrace with a new prayer hall.  His aim was to draw on traditional Islamic design and architecture - Anatolian tile patterns, mashribyya screens - to articulate a new visual and cultural language for this building, rather than mimic the past, and so create a dialogue between new and old in this east London street.

The lecture will be followed by an informal reception.
