The Bold and the Beautiful: exploring new design for old buildings
The SPAB believes that, alongside careful repair of historic fabric, sympathetic new interventions can help to keep old buildings in sound condition and active use. Good new design is hard to define, but readily recognisable - respecting the old, making creative use of materials, attention to detail, excellent craftsmanship, and establishing a dialogue between new and old. In this series of lectures we explore three projects illustrating contrasting approaches to new design for old buildings.
Croft Lodge Studio: a project of small delights and skilful solutions

Working with designer David Connor, Kate created a new studio in the Herefordshire countryside, not by renovating a derelict seventeenth century cottage but by encasing the ruin - ivy, cobwebs, birds’ nests and all - inside a new high-performance outer shell clad in black corrugated iron to echo the agricultural buildings of the area. Kate will describe her approach to creating Croft Lodge Studio - winner of the AJ Small Projects award in 2017.
The lecture will be followed by an informal drinks reception.
