Old Chapel. We'll hear from Victoria Wales from A
rchitecton\, lead conservation architect for the p
roject\, to learn about the building's history\, t
he process of repair\, and aspirations for the Tol
puddle Old Chapel Trust.

\n This bui
lding started life in 1818 as a Wesleyan Chapel. I
t was built by local residents including agricultu
ral labourers using traditional materials and tech
niques of the area. Some of the early worshippers
there later became known as the Tolpuddle Martyrs.
\n
\n Later in the 19th century\, a n
ew Methodist chapel was built nearby\, and the old
building fell into agricultural use. It was ‘redi
scovered‘ in a decayed condition in the 1980s and
was then Listed Grade II* mainly for the historica
l connections.
\n
\n The Old Chapel ha
s now been repaired and extended with the assistan
ce of several agencies and is operated by the Tolp
uddle Old Chapel Trust as a public resource.
\n
\n Our speaker\, Victoria Wales from Ar
chitecton\, was the lead conservation architect fo
r the project.
\n
\n Dorset Group has
been attempting to visit the building for some tim
e but was unsuccessful in gaining access while the
repairs were taking place. We now have the opport
unity to visit and learn more about the building’s
history\, the process of repair\, and the aspirat
ions of the Trust. Providing information and educa
tion on the conservation of traditional buildings
is one of their principal objectives and SPAB hope
s to be able to work with the Trust for mutual ben
efit.

\n The Tolpuddle Old Chapel Tr
ust will provide a self-guided walk around the vil
lage taking in the Martyrs Museum and other Martyr
s-related sites in the village. And suggest the Ma
rtyrs Inn nearby will be open for lunch – booking
advised 01305 602115.
