Join us at Elvaston Castle for th is hands-on two-day course. You will learn the ess entials of historic brickwork repair from Terrence Lee\, one of the UK’s leading authorities on hist oric brickwork and author of Traditional Brickwork : Construction\, Repair and Maintenance.

Through a combination of live demonstrations an d practical sessions\, you will learn how to asses s\, prepare\, and repair traditional brick walls. You will come away with the ability to identify an d repair damage to historic brickwork to retain th e beauty and structural integrity of your masonry\ , while staving off further decay.

Wo rking on sections of wall in and around the stable yards will give you plenty of opportunities to tr y out your new skills on real historic masonry\, u nder Terrence Lee’s expert guidance and supervisio n. Although this is an introductory course\, you s hould come away from it with the confidence to ide ntify and remediate defects and failures typically found in historic brick masonry\, and to carry ou t good\, honest brickwork repairs using traditiona l lime mortar.

Day One

\n \n \n \n Terrence Lee\, lead tutor\n \n

Terrence has worked on a diverse range of traditional build ings during his 15-year career\, from  small verna cular cottages and garden walls to Georgian and Vi ctorian townhouses and terraces.  Alongside his pr actical building conservation projects\, Terrence also teaches and lectures on historic brickwork. H e has provided practical and theoretical training for organisations including the National Trust\, R IBA\, Canals and Rivers Trust\, Townscape Heritage Initiative\, Harper Adams University\, University of Singapore\, University of Birmingham\, Birming ham City University and the Tywi Centre.  His stud ents have included apprentices\, craftspeople\, po stgraduate researchers and architects.

Following careers in the military and in civil and construction engineering\, Terrence qualified with City and Guilds Advanced Craft certificate in Brickwork\, before completing first a history deg ree and then a Masters in Historic Environment Con servation. He is a strong believer in Continued Pr ofessional Development and attends craft and theor etical CPD sessions\, as well as delivering CPD tr aining to others himself.  Further sharing his pas sion and knowledge on the subject\, Terrence recen tly published a book (Traditional Brickwork: Const ruction\, Repair and Maintenance) which was descri bed in a SPAB Magazine review as “highly practical as well as informative … with excellent illustrat ions throughout”.

Ellie Jae Dobson\, assistant tutor

\n \n

Ellie Jae is a brick layer and stonemason based in Yorkshire.  She bega n her career as a brickwork apprentice with Dobson Construction (no relation) before honing her skil ls further at construction college\, where she dev eloped a passion for decorative techniques.  Ellie Jae’s love of history together with a growing adm iration of traditional craftsmanship drew her towa rds conservation.  While working on repairs to Cal verley Old Hall she heard about the SPAB’s Fellows hip programme\, which she successfully applied for and completed in 2024.

About Elvaston Castle and Gardens\n \n

Elvaston is a Grade II* listed estate j ust outside Derby.  The 'castle' was originally a manor house built for Sir John Stanhope in 1633\, before being partially rebuilt and extended the Go thic Revival style in 1817.  It remained in the St anhope family until the 1960s and was eventually a cquired by Derbyshire County Council\, which opene d it to the public in 1970 when it became England' s first Country Park.  It is now run in partnershi p with Elvaston Castle and Gardens\, who are worki ng with Derbyshire County Council to safeguard Elv aston's future while providing opportunities for e ducation\, community engagement and volunteering f or the people of Derbyshire and beyond.
