 ee\, one of the UK’s leading authorities on histor
 ic brickwork and author of Traditional Brickwork:

 >Through a combination of live demonstrations and 
 practical sessions\, you will learn how to assess\
 , prepare\, and repair traditional brick walls. Yo
 u will come away with the ability to identify and 
 repair damage to historic brickwork to retain the 
 beauty and structural integrity of your masonry\, 
 while staving off further decay. </p>\n \n <p>Work
 ing on sections of wall in and around the stable y
 ards will give you plenty of opportunities to try 
 out your new skills on real historic masonry\, und
 er Terrence Lee’s expert guidance and supervision.
  Although this is an introductory course\, you sho
 uld come away from it with the confidence to ident
 ify and remediate defects and failures typically f
 ound in historic brick masonry\, and to carry out 
 good\, honest brickwork repairs using traditional 
 lime mortar. </p>\n \n <h3>Who is this course for?

  level course aimed at building professionals and 
 craftspeople seeking to work with or better unders
 tand traditional brick masonry. It is also suitabl
 e for building owners and caretakers keen to learn
  more about how to maintain and repair historic br

 n \n <h3>You will need </h3>\n \n <ul>\n 	<li>Plea
 se wear overalls or working clothes that you don't
  mind getting dirty\, and flat\, enclosed footwear
 \, ideally steel toe-capped boots. All other PPE i
 s provided.</li>\n 	<li>The work will involve knee
 ling so you may wish to wear knee pads or bring a 
 suitable kneeler cushion.</li>\n 	<li>We will most
 ly be outside\, so we recommend you wear warm laye
 rs and bring waterproofs in case of rain.</li>\n <

 , where we will meet at the start of each day (tbc

 Terrence Lee\, lead tutor</h3>\n \n <p>Terrence ha
 s worked on a diverse range of traditional buildin
 gs during his 15-year career\, from  small vernacu
 lar cottages and garden walls to Georgian and Vict
 orian townhouses and terraces.  Alongside his prac
 tical building conservation projects\, Terrence al
 so teaches and lectures on historic brickwork. He 
 has provided practical and theoretical training fo
 r organisations including the National Trust\, RIB
 A\, Canals and Rivers Trust\, Townscape Heritage I
 nitiative\, Harper Adams University\, University o
 f Singapore\, University of Birmingham\, Birmingha
 m City University and the Tywi Centre.  His studen
 ts have included apprentices\, craftspeople\, post
 graduate researchers and architects.  </p>\n \n <p
 >Following careers in the military and in civil an
 d construction engineering\, Terrence qualified wi
 th City and Guilds Advanced Craft certificate in B
 rickwork\, before completing first a history degre
 e and then a Masters in Historic Environment Conse
 rvation. He is a strong believer in Continued Prof
 essional Development and attends craft and theoret
 ical CPD sessions\, as well as delivering CPD trai
 ning to others himself.  Further sharing his passi
 on and knowledge on the subject\, Terrence recentl
 y published a book (Traditional Brickwork: Constru
 ction\, Repair and Maintenance) which was describe
 d in a SPAB Magazine review as “highly practical a
 s well as informative … with excellent illustratio
 ns throughout”. </p>\n \n <h3>Ellie Jae Dobson\, a
 ssistant tutor</h3>\n \n <p>Ellie Jae is a brickla
 yer and stonemason based in Yorkshire.  She began 
 her career as a brickwork apprentice with Dobson C
 onstruction (no relation) before honing her skills
  further at construction college\, where she devel
 oped a passion for decorative techniques.  Ellie J
 ae’s love of history together with a growing admir
 ation of traditional craftsmanship drew her toward
 s conservation.  While working on repairs to Calve
 rley Old Hall she heard about the SPAB’s Fellowshi
 p programme\, which she successfully applied for a
 nd completed in 2024.</p>\n \n <h3>Accessibility</

 \n \n <p>Elvaston is a Grade II* listed estate jus
 t outside Derby.  The 'castle' was originally a ma
 nor house built for Sir John Stanhope in 1633\, be
 fore being partially rebuilt and extended the Goth
 ic Revival style in 1817.  It remained in the Stan
 hope family until the 1960s and was eventually acq
 uired by Derbyshire County Council\, which opened 
 it to the public in 1970 when it became England's 
 first Country Park.  It is now run in partnership 
 with Elvaston Castle and Gardens\, who are working
  with Derbyshire County Council to safeguard Elvas
 ton's future while providing opportunities for edu
 cation\, community engagement and volunteering for
