Jonathan Macauley & Conall Doherty present an overview of their conservation and restoration work at the Grade 1 listed, 18th Century, 6 Grafton Street, Mayfair, in its conversion from a derelict office building to a high-class entertainment venue.

Topics include the assessment and repair of the Victorian era timber roof using traditional timber jointing techniques, the extensive analysis of the 200 year-old trussed-girder timber floor beams to modern codified loads (adopting state-of-the-art dynamic testing techniques), and the appraisal of the original stone cantilever grand staircase.

A laser point-cloud survey was used to develop a fully coordinated BIM model which not only enabled close coordination between disciplines, but also provided a detailed record of the asset, aiding discussions with Historic England and enabling highly accurate specification of repairs.

Jonathan Macauley
Jonathan has almost 20 years’ experience in the industry and is joint Managing Director at Design ID where he has led the growth of the practice since 2007, now employing over 40 staff with offices in Hillsborough and London. He has design experience for a broad project portfolio from large commercial schemes to bespoke art installations, and specialises in the restoration of historic properties in London. His conservation work at St.Mel’s Cathedral in Longford, Ireland received the IStructE Regional Group prize in 2016. Jonathan has a passion for art and continues to produce bespoke furniture and sculptures influenced by mathematical principles. This balance of artistic flair and practical ability has driven his creative, hands-on approach to engineering solutions. His initial career was spent working on large scale industrial and education projects at home and overseas with Mott MacDonald and then O’Connor Sutton Cronin. In 2006, he was nominated for the Chartered Engineer of the Year by the Institution of Engineers of Ireland.

Conall Doherty
Conall has a wealth of local and international experience having spent 8 years working in Dubai, Sydney and Berlin prior to joining Design ID in 2018. He has a broad project portfolio encompassing several highly accoladed projects in the arts and culture sector; the iconic ‘Louvre Abu Dhabi’ museum, the ‘Phoenix Art Gallery’ in Sydney (Dezeen Cultural Building of the Year 2020), and more recently the ‘Halcyon Art Gallery’ at Harrods. He has a keen interest in the conservation and restoration of historic buildings and structures, and is currently working towards becoming a Conservation Accredited Registered Engineer (CARE). His project experience includes the restoration of Listed buildings in Westminster, structural assessments for several National Trust properties, and an appraisal of the Thompson’s (Titanic) Graving Dock, Belfast. Conall graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2010 with a MEng Structural Engineering with Architecture. He then spent over four years with Buro Happold, during which time he was awarded ‘Leader of Tomorrow’ at the 2013 British Construction Industry Awards and ‘Young Engineer of the Year’ at the Big Project Middle East Construction Awards.
