About the event
Young architects Bethan Watson and Cristiano Lamarque, who were awarded equal first place in the SPAB's 2016 Philip Webb Award, will talk about their winning schemes at this evening event. Both schemes - one for the recovery of the earthquake-damaged Italian town of L'Aquila and the other for reimagining a redundant convent complex at Evora in Portugal as a care centre for people living with Alzheimer's - explored how memory (of people, places, activities) can inspire the revitalisation of historic places for new uses. The importance of memory and the layers of history at sites like these was a powerful thread running through the year's Webb Award entries. Judge Ptolemy Dean, a SPAB Scholar and architect to Westminster Abbey, will introduce the event with a perspective on the 2016 competition and the significance of memory in the SPAB's approach to old buildings.

The event will include the presentation of Philip Webb Award 2016 winners’ certificates and an informal drinks reception.
