Every mill needs volunteers. The one thing in common with all volunteers is that they get a great deal of enjoyment from what they do. It is their enthusiasm and commitment that keeps mills flourishing and makes them captivating places to visit. How do we get people involved in mill volunteering? How do we tap the experience and enthusiasm of people to secure their commitment? The course will provide a volunteering toolkit for those facing these challenges.

The day will be spent understanding how to support best practice in the recruitment, management and engagement of volunteers. Speakers will offer insights and key advice on aspects of recruitment and safeguarding; selection and induction; supervision, training, development and exit.

Guidance will be offered on how to create a welcoming and open environment for mill volunteers and how to inspire more young people to volunteer, and consideration will be given to the different motivations for volunteering. Questions such as “What do you want a mill volunteer to do?” and “What training and development will you offer volunteers?” will be discussed during the day.
